Great background removal starts with a great source photo. If the original shot is blurry, poorly lit, or at a bad angle, no tool — automatic or manual — can fully fix it afterward. Here are practical ways to improve your product photos before they ever reach an editing tool, no studio equipment required.

Light from the side, not above

Overhead light (including most ceiling lights and direct sunlight at midday) creates harsh reflections directly on metal and stones, which is exactly what confuses background removal around edges. A window with soft daylight, with your product placed beside it rather than under it, gives much more even, diffused light.

Use a plain, matte background when you can

A shiny or textured surface directly behind a reflective product often shows up inside the reflection itself. A plain matte sheet of paper or fabric — any solid color, doesn't need to be white — gives the background remover a much cleaner edge to work with.

Shoot slightly closer than feels natural

Small items like rings or earrings often get photographed from too far away "to be safe," which means fine details like prongs or thin bands end up just a few pixels wide in the final image. Getting physically closer (or using your camera's macro mode) keeps those details large enough for both editing and buyers to see clearly.

Take more than one angle

If a photo doesn't come out clean after background removal — a chain overlapping itself, a shadow crossing a stone — it's often much faster to reshoot from a slightly different angle than to fix it after the fact. Take 5–10 shots per item when you can, and pick the cleanest one to edit.

Avoid glass-on-glass or metal-on-metal setups

Placing a glass item on a mirrored or glass surface doubles the transparency problem — now there are two layers for the background remover to see "through." A plain surface underneath makes a real difference.
